PERRINE FAMILY BOOKS AND INFORMATION:
ANDERSON, PERRINE, BARBOUR - SMITH, HOWELL - CLARK, PORTER AND SAVERY FAMILIES with a GENEALOGICAL and BIOGRAPHICAL record of some who were PIONEERS IN AMERICA by Heariette E. Savery Smith. First published by the Perrine Press, Detroit, Michigan in 1902, this family history traces its roots to Daniel Perrin the Huguenot's brother Henri. So for most of us, the common ancestor would be Daniel's father, Pierre Perrin of Isle of Jersey, England. In 1685, the French King revoked the Edict of Nantes which had guaranteed French Huguenots freedom to practice their religion in peace. So Pierre Perrin, his Dutch wife, and their son Henri fled with only what they could carry. First traveling to the Netherlands, they booked passage on the Caladonia to the New World.
HENRY PERRINE, Plant Pioneer of the Florida Frontier, by Kaye Edwards CARTER. This charming children's book, (probably for 4th grade - 9th grade), from the Southern Pioneer Series, gives the fascinating personal history of Dr. Henry Perrine. After a short stint as a teacher in New Jersey, he went on to medical school. Heading west, Dr. Perrine practiced medicine, on the frontier, near Ripley, Illinois. He wrote the first American article, advising the use of quinine for the treatment of malarial fevers, after carrying out the safe dosage studies on himself. Moving south, he served as the US Consul in tropical Campache, Yucatan, Mexico, where he provided free medical services to the local population. During this time period, he became engrossed in tropical botany in pursuit of useful tropical plants. Heading back north, he returned to America to begin developing 230,000 acres the US Congress gave him for a Nursery of Useful Tropical Plants. But hostilities during the Second Seminole War prevented him from moving his family safely on the land. So he moved to Indian Key, in the Florida Keys to await the end of the war. But there, tragedy strikes the world renowned tropical botanist and his extensive research. This is an excellent way to introduce children to a wonderful part of the Perrine family history.
